We saw Ian McKellen and Laura Linney in “Mr. Holmes” today. The movie is about an aging Sherlock Holmes in his twilight years, living as a recluse with his fading memories. His reputation is created by his author partner, John Watson, who embellished and fabricated Holmes into an international sensation. But Holmes gives up his life of crime-solving after his brutally accurate analysis of the facts has unfortunate repercussions. Now he has regrets, but can’t remember why.
It’s a sad tale yet an oddly uplifting one. It demonstrates that words are the most powerful things in the world… and that the truth has the power to destroy, while lies have the power to heal.
