She’s not coming back
For most of a year after he drove her away with his bad behavior, an acquaintance has been begging his wife to move back in with him. She says she’s thinking about it, but she won’t actually do it. He thought she had agreed to a specific date at least twice, only to have her back out at the last minute. So his logical dichotomy is making him depressed: he is certain that she will move back in with him, but her continued failure to do so belies the promises he perceives her to make.
The more reality intrudes upon his fantasy, the more depressed he gets. I do not know how to help him, other than to simply leave him alone, to get used to the fact that she is not coming back.
