“Happy New Year” texts from unknown people

I got several “Happy New Year!” texts from numbers that aren’t in my address book. By definition, if they’re not in my address book, then they’re not people I talk to. The area codes were familiar, from cities and states where I know people, but I don’t recognize these numbers.

I could have replied with “Who are you?” but I don’t really care. I simply ignored them. Presumably they will not care either, or they wouldn’t have sent something as impersonal as a text (and what was probably a global text to everyone in their address book, with all the personal care and thought that entails, which is to say, none at all).

And so begins another year on this little planet. It’s moments like these that make me long for home. Then again, I should enjoy this moment, because every moment here can be the last.

Charlotte is my furnace! Was just telling her yesterday that if I had 5 more Charlottes, I would save on heating costs. Will definitely give her a hug for you!
