Nice to meet a hardworking immigrant

You see so many stories about immigrants (legal or illegal) collecting welfare, collecting Social Security payments, and not working (or working for cash and not paying income taxes), that it’s gratifying to meet an immigrant who actually works hard for a living. My taxi driver yesterday was from the Dominican Republic. He is married to an American wife. He drives an 8-hour taxi shift from 5 AM to 1 PM, then he goes to school nights and weekends to learn how to speak and write English (at his wife’s urging), and work toward a bachelors’ degree in Computer Science (his interest).

He’s not content to drive a taxi. And he is too proud to sit around and collect welfare. He wants to have a better life, and he’s willing to work toward getting one.

I was impressed with his attitude. I think America needs more people like him.

My boss just got his citizenship – by a judge who started out in the country as a taxi driver. :) Tell him it does happen if he ever doubts himself.
