Landscape, “My Name is Norman Bates”

Norman Bates is the main character from Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “Psycho” (1960).

In 1981, the British New Wave band Landscape (whom I had never heard of before) released a single, “My Name is Norman Bates,” which scored a minor hit on the British pop charts.

In 1998, the Swedish electronica band Covenant released a remake of that song. I like it much better because it has samples from the movie “2010: The Year We Make Contact” and from “Psycho.” The “2010” samples (people talking, clanking metal of hatches and heavy breathing in their spacesuits) are from where John Lithgow boards the derelict USS Discovery orbiting Jupiter. Oddly, the song ends with a sample from earlier in “2010” where John Lithgow has a panic attack on the long float across the void from his ship to the Discovery.

The fan video below is the only one I can find. It’s got an overlay of actual movie dialogue from “Psycho” which gets in the way of the song. Also, the visuals are rather disturbing, so you may not want to watch, just listen.
