What not to use for hold music

I called a hospital on the phone the other day. They put me on hold.

The hold music – and I am not making this up – was the theme to the 1970s television show “M*A*S*H.”

The theme was written by Johnny Mandel and Mike Altman in 1970. It has lyrics, and it has a name.

It’s called “Suicide is Painless.”

Seriously, this would be the last song I would pick to have as hold music for a healthcare organization. But it’s a new millennium for healthcare, and suicide is certainly cheaper, if not necessarily painless.

I wonder who lived to tell the painless story. Definitely not painless for the ones having to deal with it.

That is pretty funny… but not, at the same time.
