Icy Hot is not the same as Vicks VapoRub

A friend of mine here in the jungle is suffering from a fungal infection in a sensitive area. It’s common in humid climates, his doctor said. None of his prescriptions seemed to touch it, though. I recommended a dilute solution of bleach, but he was hesitant to use that. More than one person had mentioned to him that the camphor in products like Vicks VapoRub is effective at killing the fungus.

He didn’t have any Vicks. But he did have some Icy Hot. They’re basically the same, he thought, so he tried it.

He spent the next fifteen minutes in the shower, frantically trying to scrub off the Icy Hot, which was burning him viciously.

I laughed at his tale, which annoyed him at first, but eventually he laughed too.

Now he knows. Icy Hot is not the same as Vicks VapoRub.

Hold on. We cannot trust the advice of people without medical training (or, perhaps even those with it)? I suppose all that’s left is to resort to asking strangers on the internet…

This is a wonderful anecdote to share with my house of boys. Thank you, thank you.
