M.I.A., “Macho”

2012-02-09T11:37:27+00:00

I was surprised that British rapper M.I.A. (Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam) performed at the Super Bowl halftime. I didn’t think many Americans knew who she was. After she waved her middle finger at them, though, they know who she is now. She uses her middle finger a lot, I think. It’s part of the job, being a rapper.

I’ve always thought this song is one of her best. I think she had some relationship with the Tamil Tiger rebellion in Sri Lanka (she is Tamil). Her videos and albums have contained Tiger imagery, though she denies promoting the Tiger cause. Whatever. Since the Sri Lankan military crushed the Tiger rebellion in 2009, it’s kind of a moot point.

I mashed up a coconut outside by the back wall
shoot my clothes on eating up my mango
Daddy was home, huntin’ up the warble
Get your mama, quick got the polo
We had no idea we were cookin’ for commando
Everybody came in 4-wheeler truckloads
Big head with players on the downlow
Black coffee and fill in the info

And now we really rock now, we’re macho
and that’s what we wanted all along
Hanging up like its the laws of our ghetto
And now we see that things are not simple

I can’t have videos made by Sony, yo
Spring films of Rocky and Rambo
Roll model from hollywood to jungle
We learned to battle using our heroes
Aviator shades, no winds with the gren-ade
Hittin that, uh camouflage and band-aid
Homemade tin weapons that ricochet
When it’s hot, we all make lemonade

And now we really rock now, we’re macho
and that’s what we wanted all along
Hanging up like its the laws of our ghetto
And now we see that things are not simple

Picked out an idiom and got my uniform,
girl gladiator, step in the stadium
One next to chick now talkin’ rebellion
Cyanide pill hangin’ like medallion

And now we really rock now, we’re macho
and that’s what we wanted all along
Hanging up like its the laws of our ghetto
And now we see that things are not simple
